Me and My Girl, one
of the most popular musicals of all time, tells the story of Bill
Snibson, a cockney costermonger who
suddenly inherits the earldom of Hareford, and his beautiful Lambeth girlfriend,
Sally Smith (played by Louise).
However, the prior earl's will specifically states that the heir must be deemed
a fit and proper person by two aristocratically snooty executors, the Duchess of
Dene and Sir John Tremayne, and marry a girl approved by them. The duchess is
determined to transform Bill into a proper gentleman and that means no Sally in
Bill's future. The duchess organises a reception for Bill to meet some
"appropriate" girls, but events take an unexpected turn when Sally arrives - in
full cockney attire - together with a team of Pearly Kings and Queens performing
the Lambeth Walk.
Chaos and comedy ensue for the rest of the show, which also
features other well known songs by Noel Gay, L. Arthur Rose and Douglas Furber including Hold My Hand, Once You Lose Your
Heart, and Take It On The Chin (all sung by Louise), The Sun Has Got His
Hat On, Leaning On A Lamppost, and of course the title song, Me And My
Girl.
With Louise as the lovely Lambeth lass, Sally Smith, and Karl Howman as Bill
Snibson, Me and My Girl set box office records at the Adelphi Theatre in London's West
End. She was asked back to star as Sally for another year at
the Adelphi with Les Dennis. Louise reprised this wonderful role in a sold-out run at
the Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham. (Don't miss the great
Reviews).
